What is Mini-Puberty Evaluation?

Mini-puberty is the transient activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis during the first 6 months postnatally. Testosterone in male infants and estradiol and FSH in female infants can reach pubertal-like levels.

This physiological process can present with testicular growth and penile development in male infants, and breast budding and vaginal discharge in female infants. It usually does not require intervention but its differentiation from pathological precocious puberty is important.

Symptoms

Testicular enlargement in male infants
Breast budding in female infants
Vaginal discharge or mild vaginal bleeding
Transient pubic hair (rare)
Acne-like skin findings

Risk Factors

Premature birth (more pronounced mini-puberty)
Low birth weight
History of intrauterine growth restriction

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If pubertal signs persist beyond 6 months
  • If excessive growth velocity is observed
  • If advancement of bone age is detected
  • If there is a family history of precocious puberty

Treatment Methods

01
Treatment is usually not needed (physiological process)
02
Monitoring of gonadotropin levels (LH, FSH)
03
Assessment of sex steroid levels
04
Bone age (when needed)
05
Exclusion of pathological precocious puberty
06
Family education and reassurance
