What is Megaprosthesis Tumor Reconstruction?

Megaprostheses are large modular metallic endoprostheses used to reconstruct skeletal defects after wide resection of primary or metastatic bone tumors involving the proximal and distal femur, proximal tibia, proximal humerus, and pelvis.

Modern designs offer modular components, hydroxyapatite collars to reduce stress shielding, silver-coated surfaces to reduce infection, and rotating-hinge knee mechanisms; expandable prostheses are available for skeletally immature children.

Outcomes depend on tumor biology, surgical margins, soft tissue reconstruction, infection prevention, and rehabilitation; long-term complications include aseptic loosening, infection, and mechanical failure requiring revision.

Symptoms

Bone pain at tumor site
Palpable mass and swelling
Pathologic fracture
Limited joint range of motion
Limp and functional impairment
Weight loss and systemic symptoms in advanced disease
Local recurrence at prior surgical site

Risk Factors

Osteosarcoma in adolescents and young adults
Ewing sarcoma
Chondrosarcoma
Metastatic bone disease
Failed prior limb salvage surgery
Massive bone defect after revision arthroplasty
Trauma with extensive bone loss

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Suspected primary bone tumor
  • Pathologic fracture in known cancer patient
  • Massive bone defect after tumor resection
  • Failed limb salvage requiring revision
  • Severe functional disability after tumor surgery
  • Suspected local recurrence
  • Need for complex limb reconstruction

Treatment Methods

05
Adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy when indicated
06
