What is Emergency Evaluation of Loss of Consciousness?

Loss of consciousness is the temporary or permanent loss of the ability to respond to environment and stimuli. It can result from many causes — syncope, hypoglycemia, epileptic seizure, stroke, or cardiac arrest.

Initial evaluation involves airway, breathing, and circulation (ABC) checks. Regardless of the cause, the first steps are placing the patient in a safe position and calling 112.

Symptoms

No response to environment, loss of eye contact
Convulsions or limp body posture
Irregular breathing or apnea
Skin color change (pallor, cyanosis)
Jaw clenching or frothy oral secretions
Pre-syncopal dizziness and visual darkening

Risk Factors

Cardiac arrhythmias and valvular heart disease
Diabetes and hypoglycemia
History of epilepsy
Low blood pressure and dehydration
Stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage
Drug or alcohol use

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 immediately if loss of consciousness occurs
  • Begin CPR if the patient is not breathing
  • Anyone experiencing first-time loss of consciousness should be evaluated in the ER
  • If confusion persists after recovery, remain in the ER

Treatment Methods

01
ABC assessment and lateral safety position
02
Blood glucose measurement; dextrose if low
03
ECG, brain imaging, and blood tests
04
Cause-directed therapy (antiarrhythmic, antiepileptic, thrombolytic)
05
Neurology or cardiology specialist consultation
