What is IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)?

IUI is a simple and relatively inexpensive assisted reproductive technology method in which prepared sperm is placed into the uterine cavity through a thin catheter. It can be combined with ovulation induction to increase success rates.

At least one open tube and sufficient active sperm count (≥5 million motile sperm after washing) are required for the procedure. The single-cycle success rate is around 10-20%, and after 3-6 cycles, the cumulative pregnancy rate can reach 30-50%.

Although IUI is less invasive and costly compared to IVF, success rates are also lower. Transition to IVF is recommended after 3-6 unsuccessful IUI cycles.

Symptoms

Unexplained infertility
Mild-moderate male factor infertility
Cervical factor infertility
Pregnancy desire with donor sperm
Failure to conceive naturally despite ovulation induction
Mild endometriosis

Risk Factors

Tubal blockage (contraindication for IUI)
Severe male factor (total motile sperm <5 million)
Advanced maternal age (decreases success rate)
Multiple pregnancy risk (increases with ovulation induction)
OHSS risk
Active genital infection

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When IUI indication is established after infertility evaluation
  • When pregnancy is planned with donor sperm
  • When symptoms or complications develop in IUI cycles
  • For IVF planning after 3-6 unsuccessful IUI cycles

Treatment Methods

01
Ovulation monitoring and timing (natural or induced cycle)
02
Sperm preparation: motile sperm selection by gradient centrifuge
03
Intrauterine sperm transfer with IUI catheter
04
Luteal phase support: vaginal progesterone gel or suppository
05
Pregnancy test: 14 days after IUI
06
Repeat 3-6 cycles recommended in failure, followed by IVF evaluation
