What is Hip Replacement (Total Hip Arthroplasty)?

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a surgery in which, when the femoral head and acetabulum (hip socket) surfaces are damaged in the hip joint, both components are replaced with artificial implants. The acetabular cup, femoral stem, and the cartilage surface between them (polyethylene, ceramic, or metal) constitute the main components.

The surgery is applied in indications such as osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, femoral neck fracture, rheumatoid arthritis, and dysplastic hip. The average implant lifespan is 20-25 years.

Minimally invasive and robotic-assisted techniques accelerate the surgical process and recovery.

Symptoms

Severe pain in the groin and hip region
Limping and decreased walking distance
Difficulty putting on shoes (limited internal rotation)
Night pain and sleep disturbance
Leg length difference (sense of inequality)
Serious difficulty rising from a chair and climbing stairs

Risk Factors

Advanced hip osteoarthritis
Avascular necrosis (femoral head)
Femoral neck fracture
Rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory arthritis
Congenital hip dysplasia
Septic arthritis sequela

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If hip pain is seriously restricting daily life
  • If you are not benefiting from conservative treatments
  • If the joint space has closed on radiological examination
  • If walking distance has decreased to below 300 meters
  • If sudden hip pain or swelling begins after prosthesis surgery

Treatment Methods

01
Total hip arthroplasty (cemented, cementless, or hybrid)
02
Preoperative blood management and cardiac evaluation
03
Mobilization on the day of surgery or the next day
04
Physiotherapy and weight-bearing protocol (6-12 weeks)
05
Deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis
06
Long-term follow-up and implant lifespan monitoring
