What is High-Risk Pregnancy?

High-risk pregnancy is defined in the presence of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, thyroid disorder, and also in pregnancy over 35, multiple pregnancy, history of previous miscarriage or preterm delivery, uterine anomalies, and presence of genetic problems in the baby.

These pregnancies are managed by perinatology (maternal-fetal medicine) specialists and may require more frequent ultrasonography, biophysical profile, Doppler flow studies, and advanced diagnostic methods such as amniocentesis in addition to standard prenatal follow-up.

Early identification of high-risk pregnancy is critical in preventing or minimizing complications. A multidisciplinary approach — gynecologist, perinatologist, neonatologist, and related internal medicine specialists — provides the best outcomes.

Symptoms

Uncontrolled blood sugar or high blood pressure
Excessive weight gain or insufficient fetal growth
Vaginal bleeding or abnormal discharge
Severe headache, vision disturbance, upper abdominal pain
Decrease in fetal movements
Preterm contractions or water breaking (membrane rupture)

Risk Factors

Pregnancy at age 35 and over
Diabetes, hypertension, heart or kidney disease
Multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets)
Preterm birth, miscarriage, or stillbirth in previous pregnancy
Obesity (pre-pregnancy BMI >30)
Family history of genetic disease

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • When pregnancy is planned with a chronic illness
  • Without delay after the first pregnancy test
  • When vaginal bleeding or sudden water breaking is experienced
  • When severe headache or vision change occurs
  • When a marked decrease in baby's movements is felt

05
Corticosteroid: Fetal lung maturation in preterm birth risk
