What is High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)?

HIFU concentrates high-energy ultrasound waves at a single focal point to raise the temperature of target tissue to 60-85°C, producing coagulative necrosis. Real-time imaging is provided by MR or ultrasound guidance.

It is used in uterine fibroids, some cases of adenomyosis, and selected pelvic lesions. It is a minimally invasive option with short recovery time and no need for hospitalization.

Patient selection depends on fibroid location, signal intensity, distance from skin, bowel position, and the suitability of the patient's abdominal and back surface. It can be considered in cases unsuitable for conventional surgery.

Symptoms

Menstrual bleeding and anemia
Pelvic pressure symptoms
Dysmenorrhea
Urinary urgency
Pain due to adenomyosis
Symptoms in patients refusing surgery

Risk Factors

Bowel adhesions
Subcutaneous scar tissue
Fibroid calcification
Hyperintense T2 fibroids
Pelvic obesity
Presence of an IUD in the uterus

When to See a Doctor?
