What is High Fever Emergency Evaluation?

Fever is the elevation of body temperature above 38°C; 40°C and above (hyperpyrexia) is a condition that carries the risk of organ damage and requires emergency intervention. Infection, heat stroke, drug reaction, or neurological causes lead the list.

In children, high fever should be approached with particular care due to the risk of febrile seizures. However, the patient's general condition and accompanying symptoms are more directive than the absolute value of fever.

Symptoms

Body temperature above 38°C
Shivering, sweating, and chills
Headache and muscle aches
Loss of appetite and fatigue
Febrile seizures in children
Confusion and altered consciousness in severe cases

Risk Factors

Viral or bacterial infections
Immunodeficiency (chemotherapy, HIV)
Prolonged stay in hot and humid environment
Inadequate use of antipyretic medications
Meningitis and sepsis
Drug reactions (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • See a doctor immediately for fever above 38°C in infants
  • Go to the emergency room if fever above 40°C or altered consciousness in adults
  • Meningitis must be ruled out if neck stiffness or rash accompanies
  • Consult a physician if fever lasts more than 3 days
