What is Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)?

Medial epicondylitis is a degenerative tendinopathy that develops at the common tendon insertion of pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis, and other flexor muscles on the medial epicondyle of the humerus, due to repetitive overload.

It should not be confused with lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow); medial epicondylitis affects the inner side of the elbow. It is seen in golf, baseball pitching, bowling, racquet sports, and occupations using heavy hand tools.

Ulnar nerve compression often accompanies it and presents with numbness in the hand or in the 4th–5th fingers.

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on the inner side of the elbow
Increased pain on flexing the wrist
Difficulty gripping and decreased hand strength
Diffuse pain in the forearm
Numbness in the 4th–5th fingers (if ulnar nerve involvement)
Morning stiffness and elbow rigidity

Risk Factors

Sports such as golf, baseball, bowling
Working with heavy hand tools
Repetitive wrist flexion movements
Faulty racquet technique or equipment
Age 40–60
Weak forearm muscle strength

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Pain on the inner side of the elbow lasting more than 6 weeks
  • If there is weakness or numbness in the hand
  • Pain that limits daily activities
  • If conservative treatment is not responding

Treatment Methods

01
Rest and restriction of triggering activity
02
Ice application and NSAIDs
03
Physical therapy: eccentric exercises, ultrasound, TENS
04
Counterforce elbow brace
05
Corticosteroid or PRP injection
06
Surgery: tendon debridement in refractory cases
