What is Fracture and Dislocation First Aid?

A fracture is the disruption of bone integrity; it is classified as closed (skin intact) and open (bone visible or skin torn). A dislocation is the abnormal positioning of joint surfaces.

Both conditions carry the risk of vascular-nerve injury. Open fractures carry infection risk; reduction of dislocations within 4–6 hours reduces the risk of avascular necrosis.

Symptoms

Severe pain and tenderness in the fracture area
Swelling, ecchymosis and deformity
Restricted movement or abnormal movement
Audible fracture sound
Skin tear and bone visibility in open fracture
Numbness or loss of sensation (nerve involvement)

Risk Factors

Traffic accident and falls from height
Osteoporosis (advanced age, especially in women)
Sports injuries
Pathological fractures (bone tumor, metastasis)
Growth plate injuries in children
Repetitive stress fractures (runners)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • All suspected fractures and dislocations should be sent to the emergency room for X-ray
  • Call 112 immediately in open fracture and pulse/sensation loss
  • Do not move the patient with suspected femur, pelvis or spine fracture
  • Fracture suspicion in children should be evaluated with a very low threshold

Treatment Methods

01
Stabilizing the fracture area with a splint (covering the joint above and below)
02
Cold application and limb elevation (to reduce swelling)
03
Sterile cover in open fracture; no attempt at repositioning
04
Reduction, cast/splint or surgical fixation in hospital
05
Physical therapy and rehabilitation
