What is Ewing Sarcoma?

Ewing sarcoma is a highly malignant bone tumor of the small round blue cell tumor family, generally seen between the ages of 10 and 20. The EWS-FLI1 fusion gene translocation is characteristic.

It most commonly arises in the diaphysis of the femur, pelvis, tibia, and humerus; the soft tissue component is often large. The tumor grows rapidly and metastasizes to the lungs early.

Treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach; with combined surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the 5-year survival rate in localized disease may reach 60-70%.

Symptoms

Progressive bone pain
Local swelling and mass
Fever and night sweats
Weight loss and fatigue
Pathologic fracture
Lymphadenopathy
Tiredness and pallor

Risk Factors

Age range 10-20
Male sex (slight predominance)
White race
EWSR1 gene translocation
Prior radiotherapy
Congenital anomalies
Family history of cancer
