What is Embryo Transfer?

Embryo transfer is the procedure in which embryos developed after fertilization in IVF treatment are placed into the uterine cavity by passing through the cervical canal with the help of a thin catheter. Fresh or frozen embryo transfer can be performed.

Endometrial preparation is performed with natural cycle or hormone replacement protocols. Achieving the trilaminar appearance and reaching adequate thickness (≥7 mm) of the endometrium increases success.

Transfer at the blastocyst stage (day 5) allows the embryo to better adapt to endometrial receptivity. Frozen embryo transfer after biopsy is preferred when preimplantation genetic diagnosis is required.

Symptoms

Mild cramping and spotting after the procedure
Bloating due to medications
Estrogen and progesterone-dependent breast tenderness
Mild pressure sensation during the procedure
Emotional tension during the waiting period
Rarely mild vaginal discharge

Risk Factors

Advanced maternal age
Low endometrial thickness
Embryo quality and quantity
Presence of hydrosalpinx
Previous failed IVF attempts
Uterine pathologies (polyp, fibroid)
