What is Electric Shock First Aid?

Electric shock is a traumatic emergency that occurs when an electric current passes through the body. The intensity of current, voltage, contact duration, and the path the current takes determine the extent of damage.

Even with minimal visible skin burns, muscle necrosis, cardiac arrhythmia, nerve damage, and kidney failure can develop. Therefore, all electric shock cases should be evaluated in a hospital.

Symptoms

Entry-exit burn wounds
Muscle spasms and contractions
Altered consciousness or loss of consciousness
Cardiac arrhythmia and palpitations
Red-dark colored urine (myoglobinuria)
Paralysis or loss of sensation

Risk Factors

Intervention with electrical wiring (without expert)
Use of electrical appliances with wet hands
Lightning strike
Children touching electrical outlets
Industrial high-voltage lines
Damaged electrical cables

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Go to emergency room for all electric shock cases; even without symptoms
  • If unconsciousness or pulselessness, start CPR and call emergency
  • Reddish urine indicates kidney damage; do not waste time
  • Intensive care is always required in high voltage (>1000 V) contact

Treatment Methods

01
First cut off the power source; ensure safety before touching the patient
02
CPR and AED application in unconsciousness
03
Prevention of myoglobinuria with IV fluid (kidney protection)
04
ECG monitoring and cardiac observation (minimum 24 hours)
05
Burn care, orthopedic and neurological evaluation
