What is Early Intervention for Autism in Children?

Early intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to evidence-based therapies initiated as early as possible (ideally before 36 months) to take advantage of the developing brain's neuroplasticity and optimize long-term cognitive, language, and adaptive outcomes.

Core programs include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT), and naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBI). Speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, and parent-mediated approaches are integrated.

Screening at 18 and 24 months using M-CHAT-R/F is critical for early detection. Comprehensive evaluation by developmental pediatrician or child psychiatrist confirms diagnosis. Family-centered, individualized intervention plans drive measurable improvements in IQ, language, and adaptive function.
