What is Dyslexia Assessment in Children?

Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder characterized by persistent difficulties in accurate or fluent word recognition, decoding, and spelling, despite adequate intelligence, instruction, and educational opportunity. It affects 5-10% of school-age children.

Comprehensive assessment includes detailed history, hearing and vision screening, intelligence testing (WISC), academic achievement testing (reading fluency, decoding, comprehension), phonological awareness, rapid automatized naming, and ruling out other learning or attention disorders.

Early identification (kindergarten to grade 2) and structured literacy interventions based on Orton-Gillingham principles improve outcomes. Multidisciplinary teams including special educators, speech-language pathologists, and psychologists provide tailored support.
