What is Decompression Sickness?

Decompression sickness, also known as 'the bends,' occurs when dissolved nitrogen accumulated during diving forms bubbles after rapid ascent and damages vessels and tissues.

Symptoms range from joint pain, fatigue, and skin findings to spinal cord injury, pulmonary embolism, and loss of consciousness. It is classified as Type 1 (mild) or Type 2 (severe neurologic/cardiopulmonary).

The mainstay of treatment is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which accelerates bubble dissolution and supports tissue recovery.

Symptoms

Joint pain (shoulder, elbow)
Fatigue and weakness
Itching and skin mottling
Shortness of breath and cough
Dizziness and nausea
Numbness or weakness in a limb
Altered consciousness and paralysis

Risk Factors

Deep and prolonged dives
Frequent and repeated dives
Rapid ascent
Dehydration and severe fatigue
Air travel after diving
Cardiac anomalies such as patent foramen ovale

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 if joint pain, breathlessness, or altered consciousness occur after diving
  • Seek care even up to 24 hours after symptom onset
  • Reach a hyperbaric center promptly when dive-related illness is suspected
  • Always share dive history and dive profile with the physician

Treatment Methods

01
High-flow 100% oxygen
02
Intravenous fluid support
03
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)
04
Analgesia and supportive care
05
Neurological monitoring and rehabilitation
06
Air travel postponed for 24-72 hours
