What is Chondroblastoma?

Chondroblastoma is a benign cartilage-derived tumor that constitutes about 1% of bone tumors and is generally seen in young people aged 10-20 years. It is most commonly located in the epiphysis of the proximal humerus, distal femur, and proximal tibia.

Although benign, it can show locally aggressive behavior and rarely metastasize to the lungs. Histopathologically, it contains chondroblasts, mononuclear stromal cells, and giant cells.

Due to its epiphyseal location, it can have negative effects on the growth plate and joint; therefore early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Symptoms

Progressive pain in the affected joint
Night pain
Joint range of motion limitation
Local swelling
Limping
Joint effusion
Rarely pathological fracture

Risk Factors

Age range 10-20 years
Male sex (2:1 ratio)
Genetic predisposition
Open growth plate
Radiation exposure
History of previous bone tumor
Rare association with known syndromes
