What is Drowning First Aid?

Drowning is an oxygenation disorder caused by water blocking the airway or submersion preventing breathing. The distinction between complete drowning and near-drowning affects the treatment process.

In cold water drowning cases, biological death may occur later due to hypothermia; therefore the principle of 'do not decide on the cold and seemingly dead patient without rewarming' is adopted.

Symptoms

Loss of consciousness or reduced response
Cessation of breathing or very shallow breathing
Cyanosis and pallor
Cough and fluid sounds in the lungs
Signs of hypothermia (shivering, rigidity)
Irregular pulse or cardiac arrest

Risk Factors

Inability to swim
Unsupervised water environment for children
Water sports under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Epilepsy, heart disease or hypoglycemia
Fatigue or sudden waves
Remote and unsupervised beach areas

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Every rescued drowning case should be evaluated in the emergency room
  • Start CPR immediately after rescue in case of loss of consciousness and call 112
  • Go without delay if cough, shortness of breath or confusion develops
  • Call an ambulance while warming the person taken from cold water

Treatment Methods

01
Safe rescue (without endangering the rescuer's life)
02
Breathing and pulse check as soon as on land; CPR if necessary
03
Removing wet clothes and preserving body temperature
04
Hospital oxygen, lung imaging and intensive care monitoring
05
Hypothermia management and neurological evaluation
