What is Chemical Injury?

A chemical injury is tissue damage from skin, eye, or mucosal contact with acids, alkalis, organic solvents, petroleum products, or other chemical agents.

Alkaline substances (bleach, lime, ammonia) penetrate deeper into tissue, while acids cause superficial but aggressive damage.

Early and copious water decontamination (at least 20 minutes) is the cornerstone of treatment. The product name and MSDS (safety data sheet) should be obtained quickly.

Symptoms

Burning, redness, and blistering on the skin
Eye pain, redness, and increased tearing
Burning in the mouth and throat (if ingested)
Shortness of breath and cough (vapor inhalation)
Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain
Hypotension and shock in severe cases

Risk Factors

Industrial work environments
Household cleaning product accidents
Working with agricultural pesticides
Accidental ingestion in children
Failure to use personal protective equipment
Errors in storing chemical substances
