What is Bursitis (Bursa Inflammation)?

Bursae are thin cushioned sacs that reduce friction between bony prominences and the skin, muscles, or tendons. These sacs become inflamed as a result of overuse, direct blows, repetitive pressure, or systemic disease.

Subacromial bursitis (shoulder), trochanteric bursitis (lateral hip), olecranon bursitis (elbow), prepatellar bursitis (front of knee), and retrocalcaneal bursitis (heel) are the most common types.

Septic bursitis (bacterial infection) should not be confused with aseptic bursitis; treatment is completely different. If there is redness, warmth, and fever, infectious bursitis should be considered and treated urgently.

Symptoms

Localized swelling and tenderness around the joint
Pain increasing with movement or pressure
Warmth and redness in the area (prominent in infection)
Joint movement restriction
Worsening with staying in the same position for a long time
Pain with raising the shoulder (subacromial)

Risk Factors

Repeated pressure and friction (occupational)
Direct trauma or fall
Rheumatoid arthritis and gout
Diabetes and obesity
Poor posture and biomechanical disorder
Use of immunosuppressive drugs

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If swelling is red, warm, and with fever (septic bursitis)
  • If pain lasts longer than 2 weeks
  • If joint movement is seriously restricted
  • If no response to conservative treatment
  • In rapidly developing swelling after trauma

Treatment Methods

01
Rest, ice application, and protection from pressure
02
Anti-inflammatory drugs
03
Bursa aspiration (fluid drainage)
04
Corticosteroid injection
05
Physical therapy and strengthening exercises
06
Antibiotics and surgical drainage in septic bursitis
