What is First Aid in Bleeding?

Bleeding is blood loss resulting from damage to arteries, veins or capillaries. It is classified as external and internal bleeding. In external bleeding, visible blood facilitates early intervention.

An adult human has approximately 5 liters of blood; loss of 20% triggers hemorrhagic shock. Rapid and correct intervention saves lives.

Symptoms

Visible wound and blood flow
Pallor, cold-moist skin
Rapid and weak pulse
Dizziness and lightheadedness
Severe thirst
Altered consciousness (severe bleeding)

Risk Factors

Trauma and accident injuries
Use of blood thinners (warfarin, DOAC)
Clotting disorders (hemophilia)
Peptic ulcer and gastrointestinal bleeding
Early postoperative period
Heavy menstruation (menorrhagia)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call 112 if bleeding does not stop within 10 minutes despite pressure
  • Pallor, rapid pulse and altered consciousness are signs of shock; go to the emergency room
  • Emergency service is required in suspected internal bleeding (abdominal rigidity, bloody stool)
  • Consult a doctor even after minor trauma in people using blood thinners

Treatment Methods

01
Continuous direct pressure on the wound with a clean cloth
02
Tourniquet application for extremity bleeding if pressure is insufficient (within the first 2 hours)
03
Resuscitation with IV fluids and blood products
04
Surgical hemostasis (vessel suture, cauterization)
05
Antidotes for blood thinners (vitamin K, PCC, idarucizumab)
