What is Adolescent Gynecology?

Adolescent gynecology focuses on physical and developmental changes during puberty and the management of menstrual, sexual, and reproductive health concerns in young women.

Common concerns include menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, abnormal bleeding, contraception counseling, vaginal infections, and HPV vaccination.

Care emphasizes confidentiality, age-appropriate education, parental involvement balance, and screening for sexual abuse, eating disorders, and mental health.

Pelvic examinations are deferred unless clinically indicated; vaginal ultrasound and laboratory testing usually suffice for evaluation.

Symptoms

Irregular periods within the first 2-3 years of menarche (often physiological)
Severe dysmenorrhea limiting school attendance or activities
Heavy menstrual bleeding causing anemia
Acne, hirsutism, and weight gain suggesting PCOS
Missed periods (amenorrhea) requiring evaluation
Vaginal discharge, itching, or sexually transmitted infection symptoms

Risk Factors

Sexual activity without barrier contraception
Family history of PCOS, endometriosis, bleeding disorders
Eating disorders affecting menstrual function
Body mass index extremes (low or obesity)
Athletic training causing functional hypothalamic amenorrhea
History of abuse or trauma affecting reproductive health
