What is Acute Pancreatitis Emergency Management?

Acute pancreatitis is sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Gallstones and alcohol use are the most common causes. The disease ranges from mild self-limited forms to necrotizing pancreatitis.

Severity is assessed using Ranson criteria, BISAP score, and CT severity index. Severe cases carry a high risk of organ failure and mortality.

Treatment cornerstones are aggressive fluid resuscitation, pain control, and nutritional support. Early cholecystectomy is planned for gallstone-related cases.

Symptoms

Severe epigastric pain in a belt-like distribution
Pain radiating to the back
Nausea and vomiting
Abdominal distension
Fever and tachycardia
Jaundice (in gallstone-related cases)

Risk Factors

Gallstone disease
Chronic alcohol use
Hypertriglyceridemia
Iatrogenic post-ERCP
Drugs (valproic acid, azathioprine)
