What is Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)?

Saliva moistens the oral mucosa, provides antimicrobial protection, initiates digestion, and protects teeth against acids. Decreased saliva (hyposalivation) or change in its composition increases the risk of caries and infection.

Medications (antihistamines, antidepressants, antihypertensives) are the most common cause. Sjögren's syndrome, head-neck radiotherapy, and diabetes are important systemic causes.

Treatment of xerostomia should be directed at the underlying cause; supportive measures should be continued to protect dental health.

Symptoms

Persistent feeling of dry mouth
Difficulty swallowing food (need to wash down solid foods with liquid)
Difficulty in speaking
Burning, pain, and taste alteration
Frequent dental caries attacks
Lip cracking and cracks at the corners of the mouth

Risk Factors

Multiple medication use (antihistamine, antidepressants, diuretic)
History of head-neck radiotherapy
Sjögren's syndrome and other autoimmune diseases
Diabetes
Anxiety and stress (transient dry mouth)
Excessive smoking and caffeine consumption

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If dry mouth lasts longer than 2 weeks
  • Difficulty in swallowing or speaking
  • Frequent recurrent dental caries
  • If dry eyes are also present (Sjögren's suspicion)
  • Pre-treatment dental evaluation in patients planned for radiotherapy

Treatment Methods

01
Drinking plenty of water and keeping the mouth moist
02
Sugar-free gum or candy (saliva stimulation)
03
Artificial saliva sprays and gels
04
Pilocarpine or cevimeline (M3 agonist, by prescription)
05
High-fluoride toothpaste (caries protection)
06
Changing the causative drug (by doctor's decision)
