What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontic treatment uses brackets and wires or clear aligners to apply controlled forces that correct the position of teeth and jaws. Malocclusion (a faulty bite) interferes with chewing, speech and oral hygiene.

Fixed appliances (brackets and wires) are used effectively in more complex cases, while clear aligner therapy offers an aesthetic advantage in mild-to-moderate cases.

In growing children, skeletal problems can be guided more easily with functional appliances, so a first orthodontic assessment between 7 and 9 years of age is important.

Symptoms

Crowding or spacing of the teeth
Protrusion of the front teeth
Open bite or crossbite
Difficulty chewing and speech problems
Dissatisfaction with the smile aesthetics
Difficulty cleaning areas the toothbrush cannot reach

Risk Factors

Genetic discrepancy between jaw and tooth size
Long-standing pacifier use or thumb-sucking
Early loss of primary teeth
Impacted or missing teeth
History of jaw fracture or trauma

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • First orthodontic assessment in children at 7–9 years
  • When teeth are visibly crowded or spaced
  • When an anterior or posterior crossbite is detected
  • If thumb-sucking continues beyond 4 years of age
  • If you are seriously unhappy with your smile

Treatment Methods

01
Metal or ceramic bracket-and-wire systems
02
Clear aligner trays
03
Functional appliances during growth to guide jaw development
04
Fixed or removable retainers for long-term retention
05
Tooth extraction or orthognathic surgery when required
