What is Impacted Tooth?

An impacted tooth is one that cannot erupt fully because there is not enough space or the angle of eruption is wrong, so it stays in the gum or bone. Third molars (wisdom teeth) are most often impacted.

The gum pocket around an impacted wisdom tooth provides a space where bacteria can establish themselves and cause pericoronitis (gum inflammation). Over time there is a risk of damage to the neighbouring second molar and of follicular cysts or tumours developing.

Symptomatic impacted teeth or those that carry a risk of complications are removed surgically by an oral surgeon.

Symptoms

Pain and pressure in the back of the mouth
Swelling and redness of the gum
Difficulty opening the mouth (trismus)
Difficulty swallowing and neck pain
A bad taste and bad breath
Sometimes a completely silent, asymptomatic course

Risk Factors

A narrow jaw
Delayed or late tooth eruption
Genetic mismatch between tooth and jaw size
Dental crowding
Previous tooth loss
A family history

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If pain or swelling begins in the back of the mouth
  • If it becomes difficult to open the mouth
  • For panoramic X-ray review between the ages of 18 and 25
  • If tenderness is noticed in an adjacent tooth
  • For regular review of the wisdom teeth

Treatment Methods

01
Monitoring and periodic X-rays in asymptomatic cases
02
Irrigation and antibiotic therapy for pericoronitis
03
Surgical extraction of a symptomatic impacted tooth
04
Postoperative pain control and wound care
05
Orthodontic traction for partially impacted teeth
