What is Dental Implants?

A dental implant consists of a titanium screw that mimics the lost tooth root and a prosthetic structure placed on top of it. During osseointegration, the titanium fuses with the bone and provides a sturdy foundation.

Unlike a conventional bridge that requires the adjacent teeth to be cut down, an implant stands independently and prevents jaw-bone loss. Indications range from a single missing tooth to total edentulism.

Adequate bone volume, well-controlled systemic disease and good oral hygiene are essential for success.

Symptoms

Single or multiple missing teeth
Difficulty chewing and disturbed speech
Aesthetic concerns
Difficulty adapting to a removable denture
Reluctance to have adjacent teeth ground down
Wish to prevent further bone loss

Risk Factors

Insufficient bone volume (may require grafting)
Uncontrolled diabetes
Smoking (impairs osseointegration)
Active periodontal disease
Use of bisphosphonate medication
A jaw region previously irradiated

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Right after a tooth is lost, to prevent further bone loss
  • When unhappy with a removable denture
  • When you wish to replace a missing tooth without cutting the neighbours
  • For an assessment of bone availability
  • When planning aesthetic and functional improvement

Treatment Methods

01
Comprehensive pre-procedure planning (CBCT and clinical examination)
02
Bone grafting and sinus lift when needed
03
Surgical placement of the implant under local anaesthesia
04
A 3–6 month osseointegration waiting period
05
Completion of the prosthetic superstructure and follow-up care
