What is Whole Body MRI?

Whole body MRI is an MRI protocol that evaluates the entire body, from the head to the knee or ankle, in a single session. T1, STIR, and DWI sequences are used predominantly.

It is used in multiple myeloma, bone metastases, lymphoma staging, screening of hereditary cancer syndromes (Li-Fraumeni, neurofibromatosis), and the search for an unknown primary tumor.

Because it does not involve radiation and offers high soft tissue contrast, it may be preferred in younger patients and children. It is expensive and time-consuming and may not be available in every center.

Symptoms

Multiple myeloma screening and follow-up
Investigation of bone metastasis
Lymphoma staging
Screening in hereditary cancer syndromes
Search for an unknown primary tumor
General screening (in selected cases)

Risk Factors

Long examination time (45-90 minutes)
MRI contraindications
Claustrophobia
Risk of motion artifact
Cost and availability
False-positive findings and unnecessary further investigation

  • Whole body MRI is performed based on indication, not at random
  • The clinician and radiologist should decide together
  • Procedure duration and expectations should be explained in advance
  • Results should be interpreted together with the clinical picture
