What is What Is MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)??

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-radiation examination that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create cross-sectional images of tissues inside the body.

Especially superior in distinguishing soft tissues, MRI provides more information than CT in pathologies of the brain, spinal cord, joints, liver, and pelvis.

Examination time varies between 20-60 minutes. For patients with claustrophobia, open MRI or anxiolytic medication options are available.

Symptoms

MRI is a diagnostic tool, not a sign of disease
Indications: neurological deficit, joint pain and swelling
Unexplained headache or visual disturbance
Oncologic staging and treatment follow-up
Spinal canal stenosis or disc herniation
Investigation of liver, kidney, or pelvic mass

Risk Factors

Metal implants (pacemaker, cochlear implant — contraindicated if not MRI-compatible)
Claustrophobia and inability to remain still for long periods
First trimester of pregnancy (contrast-enhanced MRI is avoided)
Risk of gadolinium contrast in renal failure
Ferromagnetic foreign bodies outside the body
Need for sedation in pediatric patients

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • MRI indication is set by your physician; you cannot request it on your own
  • If you have a metal implant, inform the radiology team before the MRI
  • If you have kidney disease, have your creatinine measured before contrast-enhanced MRI
  • Discuss MRI findings with your radiologist or relevant specialist

Treatment Methods

01
MRI is a diagnostic tool; it does not deliver treatment by itself
02
Based on findings, neurology, orthopedics, or internal medicine consultation
03
If contrast MRI is needed, kidney function is evaluated beforehand
04
A sedation protocol is applied in pediatric cases
05
For emergent MRI indications (stroke, spinal cord compression) appointments are not awaited
