What is Doppler Ultrasound?

Doppler ultrasonography is a method that images intravascular blood flow and measures its velocity based on the principle of sound waves reflecting from moving blood cells.

Color Doppler, pulsed Doppler, and power Doppler are used for different purposes. It is widely applied in vascular surgery, cardiology, obstetrics, and neurology.

Symptoms

Leg swelling and pain (suspected deep vein thrombosis)
Neck bruit or history of TIA/stroke (carotid Doppler)
Renal artery flow assessment in renal failure
Liver cirrhosis or portal hypertension
Umbilical and uterine artery flow follow-up in pregnancy
Peripheral arterial disease and leg ischemia

Risk Factors

Doppler USG has no known risks or side effects
Air- and gas-containing tissues can degrade image quality
Obesity can reduce penetration
Result interpretation requires an experienced specialist
Small vessels may not be adequately visualized on some devices
Color signal may not be visible if flow is slow

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If there is leg swelling, redness, and pain, urgent Doppler should be performed for DVT
  • Carotid Doppler is mandatory after a TIA or stroke
  • Umbilical Doppler is requested when fetal growth restriction is suspected in pregnancy
  • Results should be interpreted by the relevant specialist (vascular surgeon, neurologist, cardiologist)

Treatment Methods

01
Doppler is a diagnostic tool; treatment is planned based on findings
02
Anticoagulant therapy is started if DVT is detected
03
Endarterectomy or stenting is considered if carotid stenosis is >70%
04
Liver disease treatment is initiated when portal hypertension is identified
05
Delivery planning is reviewed in fetal Doppler abnormalities
