What is Angiography?

Angiography is the imaging of vessels by injecting contrast and using X-rays or MR/CT methods. Classical catheter angiography offers the opportunity for treatment (stent, balloon) in the same session.

Coronary angiography is used to evaluate cardiac vessels, cerebral angiography for cerebral vessels, and peripheral angiography for arm and leg vessels.

Symptoms

Coronary angiography: angina, after a heart attack, or positive stress test
Cerebral angiography: suspected intracranial aneurysm or AVM
Peripheral angiography: leg pain shortening walking distance
Renal angiography: uncontrolled hypertension
Pulmonary angiography: diagnosis of pulmonary embolism
Interventional radiology: embolization, stent, drainage procedures

Risk Factors

Contrast media allergy
Renal failure (contrast nephropathy)
Bleeding diathesis and anticoagulant use
Hematoma or pseudoaneurysm at vascular access site
Risk of embolization (rare)
Radiation exposure (in long procedures)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • The decision for coronary angiography is made by a cardiologist
  • Inform in advance if you have contrast allergy or kidney disease
  • Apply pressure to the groin or wrist access site after the procedure
  • Adequate fluid intake after contrast protects the kidneys

Treatment Methods

01
Angiography is a diagnostic and interventional tool
02
Balloon angioplasty and stent implantation in coronary stenosis
03
PTA (percutaneous transluminal angioplasty) in peripheral stenosis
04
Coil embolization in intracranial aneurysm
05
Pressure on access site and bed rest after the procedure
