What is What Is an X-ray (Plain Radiograph)??

An X-ray (plain radiograph) is the most widely used radiologic test, in which X-rays are passed through the body to form an image on film or a digital detector. It is effective in evaluating bones, the lungs, and some abdominal organs.

Because of low radiation dose and speed, it is frequently used in the emergency department. Software-assisted digital systems have improved image quality and made archiving easier.

Symptoms

Suspicion of bone fracture or joint pathology
Pulmonary infection, tuberculosis, and pneumothorax
Cardiomegaly and pleural effusion
Bowel obstruction (upright abdominal X-ray)
Foreign body localization
Follow-up of scoliosis and spinal pathology

Risk Factors

Cumulative radiation in repeated X-rays
Abdominal radiographs avoided in pregnancy (especially first trimester)
Lower-dose protocols are preferred in children
Individuals with radiation sensitivity (e.g., history of leukemia)
A single X-ray may be clinically insufficient; further imaging may be needed
Limited soft-tissue discrimination (CT/MRI may be required)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Go to the emergency department immediately for a fracture-suspected X-ray after trauma
  • Seek a chest X-ray for cough, fever, and shortness of breath
  • Always have X-ray findings interpreted by a physician
  • If you are pregnant, share the indication and gestational age with the radiology team

Treatment Methods

01
X-ray is a diagnostic tool; treatment is planned by the relevant specialist based on findings
02
If a fracture is detected, splinting, casting, or surgical referral is performed
03
Antibiotic therapy is started in pulmonary infection
04
Emergency tube thoracostomy may be performed if pneumothorax is detected
05
Dose and risk-benefit balance are observed in repeated radiographs
