What is What Is CT (Computed Tomography)??

Computed tomography (CT) is an imaging method that uses a computer to process X-ray data acquired from multiple angles to create cross-sectional images of the body.

It is faster than MRI (seconds to minutes) and is superior for imaging bone, lung, and vascular pathologies. Because it uses radiation, the indication is set carefully.

When contrast medium is used, blood vessels and tumors are seen more clearly. Kidney function should be checked before contrast administration.

Symptoms

CT indications: head trauma, lung pathology, abdominal pain workup
Diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and aortic dissection
Oncologic staging and monitoring of treatment response
Sinus and temporal bone pathologies
Kidney stones and urological conditions
Suspicion of acute stroke or intracranial hemorrhage

Risk Factors

Ionizing radiation exposure (cumulative with repeated CT)
History of contrast allergy
Renal failure (risk of contrast nephropathy)
Pregnancy (especially first trimester)
Radiation sensitivity in pediatric patients
Hyperthyroidism (iodinated contrast used cautiously)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • CT indication must always be evaluated by a physician
  • If you have a contrast allergy, inform the radiology team before the test
  • Creatinine check is mandatory before contrast CT in kidney disease
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or could be pregnant

Treatment Methods

01
CT is a diagnostic tool; treatment is planned by the relevant specialist based on findings
02
Premedication (steroid, antihistamine) is given when there is a risk of contrast reaction
03
Post-contrast hydration reduces the risk of contrast nephropathy
04
In emergencies (stroke, embolism) CT results guide immediate intervention
05
In children, low-dose CT protocols that minimize radiation dose are used
