What is What Is Ultrasound (Ultrasonography)??

Ultrasonography (USG) is a real-time, radiation-free examination based on the principle of high-frequency sound waves reflecting from tissues.

It is used in evaluation of abdominal organs, pelvis, thyroid, breast, musculoskeletal system, and vessels. It is the standard for fetal development and fetal anomaly screening in pregnancy follow-up.

Symptoms

Investigation of abdominal pain and organomegaly
Pregnancy follow-up and fetal anomaly screening
Evaluation of thyroid nodule and neck masses
Investigation of breast mass and lymphadenopathy
Deep vein thrombosis (venous Doppler)
Investigation of kidney and urinary tract stones

Risk Factors

Ultrasound has no known side effects or risks
Air-containing organs (bowel, lung) reduce image quality
Obesity may decrease penetration depth
Risk of false-positive/negative results with an inexperienced operator
Gas and bowel contents obscure some structures
Because it is a dynamic test, interpretation requires experience

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Your doctor will request a USG for abdominal pain or swelling
  • Schedule an obstetric USG to confirm and follow up pregnancy
  • Biopsy may be needed after USG for thyroid nodule or neck mass
  • Always evaluate USG findings with a clinician

Treatment Methods

01
USG is a diagnostic tool; intervention is planned based on findings
02
Abscess drainage, biopsy, and paracentesis can be performed under USG guidance
03
Abdominal preparation: 4-6 hours of fasting before the test may be required
04
A full bladder improves image quality for pelvic USG
05
Results are referred to the relevant specialty
