What is What Is an EMG (Electromyography)??

Electromyography (EMG) is a neurophysiologic test that records the electrical activity of muscles and peripheral nerves. Nerve conduction study (NCS) measures the conduction velocity of nerves.

It is critical in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, and motor neuron disease. It is performed by placing small electrodes on the skin or inserting a thin needle into the muscle.

Symptoms

Numbness and tingling in the hands, arms, or legs
Progressive muscle weakness
Limb symptoms accompanying neck or low back pain
Suspicion of carpal tunnel syndrome
Evaluation of diabetic peripheral neuropathy
Investigation of ALS, Guillain-Barré, or myopathy

Risk Factors

Mild pain and transient bleeding risk with needle EMG
Needle EMG must be performed cautiously in patients on anticoagulants
The presence of a pacemaker requires caution with electrical stimulation
Needle is not used over areas of skin infection
Interpretation requires experience
Patient nonadherence (fear of pain) may affect test quality

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Refer to neurology if numbness, weakness, or tingling lasts more than 2 weeks
  • Do not apply lotion or cream before the EMG
  • Inform staff in advance if you are on anticoagulants
  • Discuss the results with a neurologist or physiatrist together

Treatment Methods

01
EMG is a diagnostic tool; treatment is planned according to findings
02
Splinting, steroid injection, or surgical decompression in carpal tunnel syndrome
03
Treatment of the underlying cause in peripheral neuropathy (diabetes, B12 deficiency)
04
Conservative or surgical treatment in radiculopathy
05
Immunosuppressive therapy or disease-specific approach in myopathy
