What is What Is an EEG (Electroencephalography)??

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive neurophysiologic test that records the brain's electrical activity through electrodes placed on the scalp.

It is used in the assessment of epilepsy, encephalopathy, sleep disorders, and brain death. Video-EEG simultaneously records clinical and electrical findings during seizures.

Symptoms

History of epileptic seizure and seizure-type classification
Unexplained loss of consciousness or confusion episodes
Sleep disorders and parasomnia
Encephalitis or metabolic encephalopathy
Brain tumor and post-traumatic seizure investigation
Localization of seizure focus before epilepsy surgery

Risk Factors

EEG has no known risk; it is non-invasive
Hyperventilation and photic-stimulation provocation rarely cause side effects
Hair conditioner and gel can disrupt electrode contact
Patient compliance issues with sleep-deprived studies
A normal EEG does not exclude epilepsy; repeat studies may be required
Artifacts (eye movement, muscle) can complicate interpretation

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • After a first seizure, an EEG must be planned by a neurologist
  • Wash your hair before the EEG; do not apply gel or cream
  • For sleep EEG you may be asked to sleep less the previous night
  • Always discuss results with a neurology specialist

Treatment Methods

01
EEG is a diagnostic tool; treatment is planned by the neurologist
02
Antiepileptic drug selection in epilepsy is guided by EEG type
03
Pre-surgical EEG focus mapping is performed in refractory epilepsy
04
Specific treatment is directed at the cause in encephalopathy
05
Periodic EEG monitoring is used to follow treatment response
