What is What Is an ECG (Electrocardiography)??

Electrocardiography (ECG) is a rapid, non-invasive, painless test that records the electrical activity of the heart muscle through skin electrodes. A standard 12-lead ECG is completed in a few minutes.

It contributes critically to the diagnosis of heart attack, arrhythmia, electrolyte disturbance, drug toxicity, and various heart diseases. In the emergency department, every patient with chest pain should have an ECG within the first 10 minutes.

Symptoms

Chest pain and pressure
Palpitations and irregular pulse
Shortness of breath and fatigue
Dizziness and syncope
Hypertension and heart failure follow-up
Routine preoperative evaluation

Risk Factors

ECG has no known risk or side effects
Skin electrode allergy can rarely develop
A static ECG may miss intermittent arrhythmias (Holter may be needed)
A normal ECG does not exclude cardiac pathology in atypical presentations
Errors in electrode placement may produce false results
Artifacts may occur in patients with marked tremor and movement

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • For chest pain, go to the emergency department immediately for an emergency ECG
  • For palpitations and syncope, get a same-day cardiology consultation
  • An annual ECG at routine check-ups is recommended for individuals over 40
  • An ECG may be required for QT-interval monitoring when starting drug therapy

Treatment Methods

01
ECG is a diagnostic tool; treatment is planned by the cardiologist based on findings
02
If STEMI is found, emergency reperfusion therapy (PCI or thrombolytics) is started
03
If arrhythmia is detected, antiarrhythmic medication, cardioversion, or ablation is considered
04
Holter (24-48 hour ECG) is used to detect intermittent arrhythmias
05
Further investigation is needed if symptoms persist despite a normal ECG
