What is Wernicke's Aphasia?

Wernicke's aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to Wernicke's area in the temporal region of the left cerebral hemisphere. Patients' speech is generally fluent and rhythmic; however, the content is often meaningless, incorrect, or filled with newly invented words (neologisms).

Comprehension is severely impaired: patients may not be able to follow even simple commands. Lack of awareness of their speech disorder is common, which may complicate rehabilitation.

The most common cause is stroke affecting the inferior division of the left middle cerebral artery. Brain tumors, trauma, and infections may also lead to Wernicke's aphasia.
