What is Neck Pain and Cervical Disc Herniation?

Neck pain is an increasingly common complaint among desk workers and technology users. The discs between the 7 vertebrae that make up the cervical (neck) spine can wear, slip, or tear; this condition is called cervical disc herniation.

Cervical disc herniation causes pain radiating to the arm, numbness, and weakness by pressing on the nerve roots. If it compresses the spinal cord (myelopathy), balance disorder and difficulty walking may also occur.

Using a computer or phone in a bent position for long periods, improper sleeping position, and a sedentary lifestyle are among the most important triggers of neck pain. The vast majority recover with physical therapy in the early period.

Symptoms

Pain and stiffness in the neck area
Pain radiating to the shoulder, arm, and fingertips
Numbness, tingling in the arm or fingers
Weakness in the arm or difficulty gripping
Dizziness and balance disorder
Increased pain when turning the neck in certain directions

Risk Factors

Working at a screen in a bent position for long periods
Improper sleeping position and use of inappropriate pillows
Carrying heavy loads and sudden neck movements
Advanced age and disc degeneration
Smoking
History of neck trauma or accident
Genetic predisposition

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • If significant weakness has developed in the arm or legs
  • If there is a disorder in urinary and fecal control
  • If walking and balance have been severely impaired
  • If pain is radiating to the entire arm and increasing
  • If there is no response to conservative treatment in 6-8 weeks

Treatment Methods

01
Physical therapy and rehabilitation (traction, manual therapy, exercise program)
02
Painkillers, muscle relaxants, and nerve pain medications recommended by the physician
03
Cervical collar (short-term, as recommended by the physician)
04
Epidural steroid injection or nerve root block
05
Surgical treatment (in cases of disc height loss or spinal cord compression)
06
Ergonomic arrangements and neck-strengthening exercises
