What is Stroke?

Stroke is a medical emergency that occurs with interruption of blood flow to brain tissue or with intracranial bleeding and can cause serious brain damage within minutes. It is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide.

Stroke occurs in two main types: ischemic stroke (vessel occlusion due to blood clot — 85% of all cases) and hemorrhagic stroke (brain bleeding due to vessel rupture). In both types, the principle 'time is brain' applies; the time to treatment initiation directly determines permanent damage.

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) refers to stroke-like symptoms lasting less than 24 hours and can be a serious warning sign of an impending major stroke. Emergency neurology evaluation is essential in every TIA case.

Symptoms

Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg (usually unilateral)
Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding
Sudden vision disturbance in one or both eyes
Sudden severe headache (causeless, the worst of life)
Loss of balance, difficulty walking, coordination disorder
Difficulty swallowing

Risk Factors

Hypertension (the most important risk factor for stroke)
Atrial fibrillation and other heart diseases
Diabetes and high cholesterol
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption
Obesity and sedentary lifestyle
Family history of stroke or heart attack
Advanced age

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Call emergency immediately if any of the FAST signs are present: Face (facial droop), Arm (arm weakness), Speech (speech difficulty), Time (don't waste time)
  • When sudden vision loss or double vision starts
  • When sudden severe headache occurs
  • When balance disorder and difficulty walking develop
  • Emergency evaluation is mandatory even if these symptoms have been experienced transiently

Treatment Methods

01
Emergency treatment: In ischemic stroke, clot dissolution with tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) or mechanical thrombectomy
02
Intensive care and neurological monitoring
03
Surgical decompression in hemorrhagic stroke (if necessary)
04
Secondary prevention: blood thinners, blood pressure, and cholesterol medications
05
Early-initiated rehabilitation: physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy
06
Control of risk factors
