What is Valerian and Sleep?

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) extract is a herbal preparation that aims to shorten sleep latency and produce a calming effect through GABAergic actions.

Studies have shown mixed results. Support has been reported in mild sleep disturbance and anxiety, but it is not a stand-alone treatment for severe insomnia.

Caution is required regarding combined use with sedatives or alcohol, pregnancy, and liver problems. Sleep hygiene and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT-I) are first-line treatments.
