What is Trigger Point (Dry Needling) Acupuncture?

Trigger point acupuncture (dry needling) involves inserting fine needles into trigger points within painful and taut muscle bands to elicit a local twitch response and induce muscle relaxation.

It is used as a complementary therapy in myofascial pain syndrome, neck-shoulder pain, low back pain, tension-type headache and chronic musculoskeletal complaints. Limited superiority over sham needling has been reported.

It should be performed by appropriately trained physiotherapists or physicians using sterile single-use needles. Side effects such as pneumothorax, hematoma and post-needling soreness can occur.
