What is Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is graded mild (concussion), moderate or severe. The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is the basic measure of severity.

Rehabilitation extends from the acute hospital to home-based care. The multidisciplinary team includes physiatry, occupational therapy, speech therapy, neuropsychology, social work and nursing.

Cognitive rehabilitation is the most critical element of TBI care, focusing on attention, memory, executive function and behaviour management. Family education and involvement are essential to success.
