What is Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation?

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord from traffic accidents, falls, sports injuries, or disease (tumor, infection), causing motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction. The injury can be complete or incomplete.

The ASIA classification (A-E) defines injury severity and rehabilitation prognosis. In incomplete injuries, neuroplasticity can support meaningful functional recovery.

Modern SCI rehabilitation combines locomotor training, functional electrical stimulation, robot-assisted gait training, and intensive upper-extremity therapy to maximize independence.

Symptoms

Muscle weakness or complete paralysis
Sensory loss and paresthesia
Bladder and bowel dysfunction
Spasticity and pain syndromes
Autonomic dysreflexia in high injuries
Respiratory difficulty in high cervical injury

Risk Factors

Traffic and work accidents
Sports injuries (diving, cycling, football)
Low-energy trauma in osteoporosis
Spinal tumor and infection
Vascular spinal cord infarction
Iatrogenic injury from spinal surgery

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Emergency presentation for any suspected spinal cord injury
  • Rehabilitation assessment after acute stabilization
  • When complications such as pressure sores or urinary infection develop
  • During an autonomic dysreflexia attack (emergency)
  • Reassessment with new functional loss or gain

Treatment Methods

01
Intensive motor rehabilitation and locomotor training
02

03
