What is Shoulder Rehabilitation?

Shoulder rehabilitation is delivered after rotator cuff repair, shoulder arthroplasty, frozen shoulder treatment or for subacromial impingement and instability through a graduated programme of exercise and manual therapy.

The programme typically runs in three phases — protective/immobilisation, strengthening, and functional reintegration — each timed to the biology of tissue healing.

Recovery after rotator cuff repair may take 9-12 months for full function; returning too early jeopardises the repair.

Symptoms

Restricted shoulder motion (especially flexion and abduction)
Inability to lift the arm overhead
Rotator cuff weakness
Night pain that disturbs sleep
Sensation of instability
Crepitus and pain with activity

Risk Factors

Size of rotator cuff tear
Patient age and tissue quality
Coexisting stiffness (frozen-shoulder component)
Poor adherence and prolonged immobility
Diabetes (slows healing)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • After rotator cuff repair or shoulder arthroplasty
  • When stiffness develops in frozen shoulder
  • When subacromial impingement is suspected
  • When shoulder instability or recurrent dislocations occur

Treatment Methods

01
Early passive range-of-motion within surgeon-protected limits
02
Pendulum exercises and capsular stretching
03
Rotator cuff and scapular stabiliser strengthening
04
Manual therapy and mobilisation
05
Modalities (TENS, ultrasound, ice) for pain control
06
Functional and sport-specific reintegration
