What is Knee Rehabilitation?

Knee rehabilitation aims to restore range of motion, muscle strength, balance and proprioception after meniscal repair, ACL reconstruction, total knee arthroplasty or cartilage repair, as well as in conservative care.

The programme is individualised by surgery type, age, activity level and goals. Modern protocols are built on the principles of early motion and early weight-bearing.

Return to sport after ACL reconstruction usually requires 9-12 months, whereas most patients regain independent walking 6-12 weeks after total knee arthroplasty.

Symptoms

Restricted motion after surgery or injury
Quadriceps muscle weakness
Knee swelling and oedema
Difficulty with stairs and ramps
Pain or insecurity on weight-bearing
Impaired balance and coordination

Risk Factors

Type of surgery and technique used
Pre-operative muscle strength and conditioning
Poor exercise adherence
Advanced age and osteoporosis
Obesity

When to See a Doctor?
