What is Post-Stroke Rehabilitation?

After a stroke (cerebrovascular event), various neurological deficits such as motor weakness, sensory loss, speech and swallowing disturbance, and cognitive impairment may develop due to brain tissue damage. Rehabilitation aims to regain these functions by leveraging brain plasticity.

Post-stroke rehabilitation is delivered by a multidisciplinary team consisting of physiotherapy (motor recovery), occupational therapy (daily living activities), speech-language therapy and a neuropsychologist. Early rehabilitation — within the first days of hospital admission — significantly improves outcomes.

The intensity and duration of rehabilitation are individualized according to stroke type, severity of involvement and individual patient capacity. Family education and social reintegration are also integral parts of the program.

Symptoms

One-sided arm or leg weakness (hemiparesis)
Walking difficulty and balance disturbance
Speech and language disorder (aphasia, dysarthria)
Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia)
Cognitive impairment and memory problems
Muscle spasm and spasticity
Pain and shoulder subluxation

Risk Factors

Severity of stroke and the affected brain region
Delay in starting rehabilitation
Older age and comorbid diseases
Depression and lack of motivation
Inadequate family and social support
Risk of recurrent stroke

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Within 24-48 hours after the stroke is diagnosed
  • If there is swallowing difficulty due to the risk of aspiration pneumonia
  • If spasticity or pain prevents cooperation
  • If home care is difficult
  • If secondary complications (deep vein thrombosis, pressure ulcer) develop

Treatment Methods

01
Neurological physiotherapy: Bobath, motor relearning, constraint-induced
02
Occupational therapy: daily living activities, hand function
03
Speech-language therapy: aphasia and swallowing rehabilitation
04
Assistive technology: robotic devices and functional electrical stimulation
05
Spasticity management: botulinum toxin, oral medications
06
Social reintegration and home adaptation
