What is Traditional Meditation and Mindfulness Practice?

Meditation refers to family of practices that train attention, awareness and emotional regulation. Mindfulness — derived from Buddhist sati — is paying attention to present-moment experience without judgement.

Major modalities include focused-attention meditation (breath, mantra), open-monitoring (awareness of thoughts and sensations), loving-kindness (metta), transcendental meditation, body scan and mindful movement (yoga, tai chi).

Evidence-based programmes include Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR, 8-week course developed by Kabat-Zinn) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for depression relapse prevention.

Neuroimaging shows changes in prefrontal cortex (attention regulation), amygdala (reduced reactivity), insula (interoception) and default mode network (reduced rumination) with regular practice.

Symptoms

Chronic stress, anxiety and burnout
Recurrent depression (MBCT halves relapse rate)
Chronic pain conditions (fibromyalgia, low back pain, headache)
Insomnia and poor sleep quality
Hypertension and cardiovascular disease (modest BP reduction)
Cancer-related fatigue and quality of life
ADHD, eating disorders, addiction (mindfulness-based relapse prevention)

Risk Factors

Severe untreated psychiatric illness (psychosis, severe PTSD, dissociation)
Acute mania or bipolar disorder unstabilised
Trauma history requires trauma-informed teacher and modifications
Severe depression — adjunct to medication, not replacement
Adverse events (anxiety, dissociation, depersonalisation) reported in intensive retreats
Lack of qualified instructor — apps and online programmes vary in quality
Unrealistic expectations or attachment to outcome (paradoxically hinders practice)

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Severe psychiatric symptoms emerging or worsening during practice — consult mental health professional
  • Chronic medical conditions: integrate meditation with conventional treatment, not replace
  • Choose certified mindfulness teacher (MBSR/MBCT, IMTA, IMA accreditation)
  • Trauma survivors should seek trauma-informed mindfulness teachers
  • Children and adolescents — age-appropriate programmes (Mindful Schools, b)

Treatment Methods

01
Start with short daily sessions (5–10 minutes) and gradually increase to 20–45 minutes
02
Choose technique fitting your goals: focused breathing for calm, loving-kindness for compassion, body scan for pain
03
Structured programmes: 8-week MBSR/MBCT, Search Inside Yourself, Headspace, Calm, Insight Timer
04
Practice consistency more important than duration — daily 10 minutes beats weekly 1 hour
05
Mindful movement (yoga, tai chi, walking meditation) suitable for those who find sitting difficult
06
Group classes and retreats deepen practice; online communities provide ongoing support
07
Integrate informal mindfulness in daily life: mindful eating, listening, working — beyond formal sitting
