What is Traditional Hypnotherapy?

Clinical hypnotherapy uses hypnosis—an altered state of focused attention with reduced peripheral awareness and enhanced response to suggestion—to facilitate therapeutic change. Mechanisms involve modulation of anterior cingulate cortex, prefrontal cortex and dorsolateral attention networks demonstrated on functional MRI, with effects on pain perception, autonomic regulation and emotional processing.

Indications with evidence-based support include chronic pain (irritable bowel syndrome, tension-type headache, migraine, fibromyalgia), procedural pain and anxiety, smoking cessation, dental anxiety, perioperative anxiety, weight management adjunct, post-traumatic stress disorder and conversion disorders. The Hypnotic Induction Profile (HIP) and Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale assess responsiveness.

Practice typically includes induction (eye fixation, progressive relaxation, imagery), deepening, therapeutic phase with direct or indirect suggestions, ego-strengthening, and termination with post-hypnotic suggestions. Self-hypnosis training enhances long-term efficacy. Contraindications include active psychosis, severe dissociation and uncontrolled epilepsy. In Turkey, hypnotherapy is regulated within Ministry of Health traditional and complementary medicine framework.
