What is Traditional Hijama (Wet Cupping)?

Hijama (wet cupping) is a traditional and complementary medicine application based on creating small superficial incisions on the skin and removing a small amount of blood with the vacuum effect of cupping.

Used in Islamic medicine and traditional Far Eastern medicine for centuries, the method gained official recognition by the Turkish Ministry of Health in 2014 within Traditional and Complementary Medicine (GETAT).

Mechanism is explained by removal of inflammatory mediators, promotion of microcirculation and triggering of natural pain-relieving systems. There is moderate-quality evidence in chronic neck pain, migraine and fibromyalgia.

Symptoms

Chronic neck and back pain
Migraine and tension headache
Fibromyalgia and chronic muscle pain
Hypertension complaints (mild)
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Plantar fasciitis
Chronic fatigue and stress

Risk Factors

Bleeding disorder (haemophilia)
Anticoagulant medication use (warfarin, DOAC)
Severe anaemia (Hb <8 g/dL)
Active skin infection or wound
Pregnancy (lower back area is contraindicated)
Severe heart failure
Active malignancy

When to See a Doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Bleeding disorder must be excluded by medical assessment before the procedure
  • Apply to a healthcare provider immediately for fever, redness or pus discharge after the procedure
  • Hijama is supportive only; it should not replace acute pain or chronic disease treatment
  • Choosing a certified GETAT practitioner is critical

Treatment Methods

Sterile cupping placement and vacuum creation
